About the Agency

THE HISTORICAL RESEARCH AGENCY was established in 2002 by Kate Spiers, an arts graduate with over ten years experience working with historical documents, initially at Oxfordshire County Record Office and then within the fields of publishing, academia and media. She has undertaken a wide variety of research projects using sources such as personal diaries and parish records, estate plans, tithe maps and Census Returns.

Kate has also used archive material as a basis for articles published in The Countryman, the national countryside magazine. Features have included Beckford’s Tower near Bath and the National Trust’s Chastleton House in Oxfordshire. She worked as a television researcher for Channel 4’s documentary Green and Pleasant Land and specialises in researching rural estates and country house history.

Where source material calls for translation or interpretation, the Agency works with London-based medieval historian Dr Nick Barratt.
